Sewing 101 - Beginner:

For sewers of all levels!  This class is the great equalizer and is well known for filling in the gaps.  We will show you - in detail - how the mechanics of your machine work, so you're not left stumped every time something goes wrong - including that dreaded bobbin.  We'll talk a lot about fabrics and show you techniques on how to manage different types as well as how to measure, cut, pin and sew a pillow cover.  We will be installing a ZIPPER in this first class, so you won't spend any (more) time fearing it! 

**No experience necessary and machines available for use in class.

  


Prerequisites: None
Materials List:
101 Kit (listed below) available for purchase before class ($20 + fabric), or feel free to bring anything you already have and buy items as needed.

1/2 - 5/8 yard of *fabric
16" pillow insert
12" zipper
Scissors
Pins/Pin Cushion
Measuring Tape
Marking Pencil
Seam ripper

*Fabric should be woven. Avoid stretchy, slippery or fabrics requiring matching. If you are buying from somewhere other than TNS, please buy 5/8 yard, as a lot of fabric stores will not cut your fabric straight.



Neck Tie - Advanced Beginner:

The neck tie has always been a great way to make a statement. Here's your chance to choose your own fabric and make the perfect tie for the perfect someone.

 

Lots of tricks to learn including working with bias cut fabric, interfacings and hand stitches.

 


Prerequisites: Sewing 101 + another class + practice!
Materials List: 2/3 yard fabric
1 yard Shape-flex fusible interfacing

*Light - medium weight cotton fabric is recommended. Avoid slippery, stretchy fabrics.



Tote Bag - Beginner:

So simple, this tote bag goes anywhere! You'll be the envy of all your friends - until you make them one! Great for the beginner sewer, we'll practice a lot of the basics from 101, along with interfacing, lining and top stitching.

Pajama Pants - Beginner:

If you think pants are too hard - think again!  These are the perfect start to understanding pant construction as well as a basic commercial pattern.  We'll cover hems and elastic casing while basically getting a handle on those wacky looking pattern pieces. Great unisex pattern for guy or gal!

Dress weight cotton or linen WOVEN fabrics are best for this project (no knits!).



Reversible Apron - Beginner:

Reversible in action, feminine in detail, this little apron is the perfect gift for the chef in your life.

 

Starting with a commercial paper pattern, we'll show you quite a few tricks including paneling, pleating, sewing and clipping curves and more!

 

Pick 2 fabrics and get twice the apron!

1 yard each of 2 different fabrics (must be at least 44" wide)
Pattern will be at shop for you - $5.

*We recommend quilt or home dec weight fabrics that do NOT require matching for this project.*



Easy Alterations - Beginner:

Highly recommended for everyone! In this class we'll work on our own clothes!  Covers fit, different types of hems and hemming jeans as well as giving you tools like adding button holes and sewing on buttons the "right way".


Prerequisites: Sewing 101 + practice at home or shop.
Materials List: In this class you will work on your own clothes, so bring ALL of them that need repair, alteration or you have questions about (minimum 5 pieces).

**Don't worry if something seems too hard or involved. Just bring everything and we'll get to what we can - and, talk about the rest!**

Bring usual sewing supplies and typical height shoes. It's also helpful to wear tank tops and other easy to change into/over clothing.



Library Bag - Beginner:

This simple book bag is great for the library, airport, coffee shop, etc.. Constructed with a double layer at the bottom for durability and french seams, this is a perfect fold-it-up gift for everyone on your list!

 


Prerequisites: Sewing 101 + practice at home or shop.
Materials List: All materials available at TNS. Feel free to purchase materials a few minutes before class!

1 yard fabric for main exterior and straps.
1/3 yard fabric for bottom contrast.
(If you would like to make multiple bags from the same combination, get 1 yard of each fabric to make reverse.)

*We recommend medium weight woven fabrics that do require matching. Avoid slippery, stretchy fabrics!*



Tank Top - Beginner:

This simple tank covers a surprising amount of techniques!

 

We'll be using a commercial pattern to create this bias cut garment with bust darts and binding for the arm and neck holes. A great wardrobe staple, perfect for day to night.

 


Prerequisites: Sewing 101 + practice at home or shop.
Materials List: All materials available at TNS.
1 1/2 yards woven fabric BurdaStyle pattern 7509

Fabric should be washed, dried and ironed before class.
Avoid slippery, stretchy and fabrics needing matching.



Bias Cut Skirt - Beginner:

So simple, this little number is a great intro to using a commercial pattern.  We'll run you through understanding the terminology, layout and diagrams.  Learn how to choose the right size, make simple hems and apply fold over elastic.  You'll want to crank out 10 more!

Raglan Sleeve Top - Advanced Beginner:

This simple top is a great introduction to commercial patterns as well as sleeve making and hemming.  It comes with 3 sleeve length options so it's perfect from season to season.

 


Prerequisites: Sewing 101 + any other class to work on accuracy + practice at home or shop.

Avoid slippery, stretchy and fabrics requiring a lot of matching. Light weight, drapey fabrics work well.



Shoe Box Tote - Advanced Beginner:

This sturdy tote is quite simple to make but we're using lots of new techniques - different from our other bags, that is. The tricks are all in the construction order - brain exercise!

 

We call it the Shoe Box Tote because new shoes will fit in there so nicely, but of course it would also be great for groceries, diapers, the beach, whatever!

Wristlet - Advanced Beginner:

It may be small, but it packs a punch full of technique!  Lining a bag can be weird - throw a zipper in there and it could be trouble.  Learn simple ways to master these tricks and pockets to boot.  So versatile - make in any fabric!

 

 


Prerequisites: Sewing 101 + Tote Bag + practice at home or shop.

We recommend the lining fabric be the same or lighter weight than the outer fabric.



Wrap Skirt - Beginner:

This adorable skirt begins with a standard A-line skirt pattern. We will show you how to alter the basic pattern pieces to the wrap-around style. We'll cover french seams, hemming, waist band and buttonholes. Plan to make several - you're gonna wanna live in this one!

 

 


Prerequisites: Sewing 101 + another commercial pattern + practice at home or shop.

Buttercup Bag - Advanced Beginner:

We co-opted this cutie from Made by Rae, cuz we love the little details. We're covering pleats, band, strap and general bag with lining construction. Cute, huh?

Shirred Summer Dress - Intermediate:

We'll make this dress based on measurements without needing pattern pieces!  Learn the subtleties of sewing with elastic thread - a trick you can use in a million places!

 

 


Prerequisites: 101 + a few other garments + plenty of practice!
Materials List: All materials available at TNS.

Measure body length from armpit to where dress will end x 2 + 10".
For example, for a dress 36" long, you'll need 2 1/4 yards of (prewashed) fabric.
Elastic thread

Socialite Dress - Intermediate:

This adorable dress by Anna Maria Horner is strangely well suited for heavier weight fabrics. A simple shift with side seam pockets, it flatters every figure! Throw it on with a cardigan or jacket and tights and you've got an easy, all-weather ensemble!

 

Learn pockets, gathering, facings as well as working with a well written and designed pattern.

 

 


Prerequisites: Sewing 101 + other projects + at least 3 other commercial pattern projects.

We recommend a medium weight woven for this dress. The home dec sateens and canvases work well! No knits, slippery, stretchy or fabrics requiring matching.



Messenger Bag - Advanced Beginner:

This bag design is so versatile you'll want 12!  Learn some new tricks with the addition of a lined flap and nylon strap.  Continued work on top stitching, lining and sewing on a curve.

Clutch - Intermediate:

This little cutie is packed with tricks!  Really key is the little zippered interior pocket - you'll be putting them in everything!  Plus we'll be working with heavier interfacing, a one piece pattern construction and with such a small project - precision is a must!

 


Prerequisites: 101, Tote, Wristlet and multiples of those.

Zippered Skirt - Advanced Beginner:

Based on Amy Butler's Barcelona Skirt, we'll be learning the tricks to the Invisible Zipper as well as adding a lining and getting a perfect fit!  This skirt is truly an any shape, any season beauty!

 

 


Prerequisites: Sewing 101 + at least 2 commercial pattern projects (pjs, raglan, bias skirt, apron, etc) + practice at home or shop!

Serger Basics - Advanced:

Ah, the serger . . . so wonderful . . . so many threads.

 

Untangle the mysteries of this handy machine used for creating stretchable seams for knit garments, cleaning up raw eges and many other useful tricks.

 

This class will get you confidant with threading the machine and understanding its functionalily as well as exploring knit fabrics.

 

After learning the machine, we'll make a simple knit, kimono-sleeve top!

 

 


Prerequisites: A lot of sewing experience!
Please email us a list of the garments and/or other projects you've made. How long you've been sewing, how regularly, etc.

We'll be using the sergers at the shop to start, so no need to bring your own.

Hand Embroidery - Any Level:

Embroidery is a fun and easy way to personalize your clothes, accessories and household items. We'll start with a stitch sampler, practice 6 basic, popular stitches as well as knots, then embroider a take-home Tote Bag.

Private Class - 2 Hours - Beginner:

We've gotten a ton of requests for help with specific projects so we're opening up some Private Class options.

 

Grab a 2 hour slot or two, let us know what you're working on and we'll get you going. Bring a friend for just $45 more!

 

Sewing 101 is still a prerequisite so you're already equipped with our basic techniques - just use the code you receive from class to sign up.
